Review: Being Jamie Baker by Kelly Oram

Title: Being Jamie Baker
Author: Kelly Oram
Publisher: Bluefields
Publish Date: June 14th, 2010

An accident that should end in tragedy instead gives seventeen-year-old Jamie Baker a slew of uncontrollable superhuman abilities. To keep her secret safe Jamie socially exiles herself, earning the title of Rocklin High's resident ice queen. But during a supercharged encounter with star quarterback Ryan Miller she literally kisses anonymity goodbye. Now the annoyingly irresistible Ryan will stop at nothing to melt the heart of the ice queen and find out what makes her so special. Unfortunately, Ryan is not the only person on to her secret. Will Jamie learn to contain her unstable powers before being discovered by the media or turned into a government lab rat? More importantly, can she throw Ryan Miller off her trail before falling in love with him?

Being Jamie Baker by Kelly Oram is a superhero origin story that can't be missed. It's fun, fast, and full of electricity!

I'm pretty picky about my superheroes, because I sometimes have a hard time connecting to them, but that was not the case when it came to Jamie Baker. Jamie is such a likable character, and even though she has her moments, for the most part she was a tough and fiery heroine. Jamie's a smart girl with a lot on her plate. I mean, she's not going through the normal high school experiences. She not only has to worry about not being liked in high school, but she also has to worry about accidentally electrocuting people. I liked that she was truly concerned about her powers and not just totally self absorbed and only interested in thinking about Ryan. I also loved Jamie's backstory and the small secrets she reveals about her life before she went all superhero.

Jamie's love interest, Ryan, is a hard guy to resist. Jamie can't resist him and I certainly couldn't either. He's so honest and sincere, but he's got the ego of a bad boy. He's got a confidence that just radiates off the pages and sucks you in. It doesn't hurt that he's so supportive of Jamie and her powers and only wants the best for her.

It took awhile for the plot to really manifest, but once it did it was fast paced and had me so hooked I couldn't put it down. As superhero stories go, it wasn't anything revolutionary, but it was entertaining and made me feel like I was watching that Nickelodeon show The Secret World of Alex Mack. Do you remember that show? If you do, you might want to give this series a go.

Evil corporations, nosy journalists, superpowers and high school? Yeah, Being Jamie Baker has it all. If you're looking for a fast and action packed read give Jamie Baker a try. Personally, I can't wait to get my hands on the rest of the series!

  1. Electrifying! A Must-Read. I absolutely loved, loved, loved "Being Jamie Baker". Jaime is a strong young woman who has faced tragedy and challenges and is trying to cope and heal in the aftermath. Ryan is popular, quarterback of the football team, and an adorable hottie; everything Jamie is trying to avoid. I couldn't put this book down. I highly recommend this book to all young adult readers, you won't be disappointed.
