Shuffle Saturday (1): My Summer Playlist

I love music. LOVE MUSIC. Any type of music usually. I have over 2400 songs on my iPhone alone. And much, much, much more on my computer. I'm out of room on my hard drive, but I don't care. I love it.

I love it because it has the ability to make the listener feel something with sound alone. There doesn't even have to be lyrics and it can pump you up and send you bouncing around the room dancing or it can make you want to cry or it can make you feel inspired. It amazes me what people can do sometimes. If I tried to play an instrument or sing I'd sound like a cat getting it's tail run over by a tricycle. I can't even read music, so I'm extremely impressed by people who can hear sounds and put them together into something so beautiful. I like a mix of everything and my music is pretty eclectic. Pretty much, if it's got a beat, I'll listen. So I thought maybe some of you might share my obsession love of all things music.

I believe music and reading go hand in hand. Different music has inspired endless ideas in authors and readers alike. And I'd love to share some of the music in my collection and maybe introduce someone to a song they might not have heard before or maybe even prompt an idea in someone. So every Saturday I'll share a song randomly played on shuffle from my iTunes collection.

If anyone would like to share links to songs they've discovered I'd love to listen. Discovering new music is like crack to me, so feel free to suggests songs or artists in the comments or join in and post some videos or playlists on your blog on and leave me a link! I'd love to check it out :)

Since this is my first Shuffle Saturday post I'm not going to post just one song but an entire playlist. Each summer for the past four years I've made a Summer Playlist consisting of songs that just fit my mood that summer. Sometimes they're popular songs, sometimes they're just songs I've heard and thought would be relaxing while hanging out by the pool. Usually my Summer Playlist's are about 50 to 80 songs long, so you're about to get whacked over the head with a bunch songs. So, sorry about that! Anyway, here's my Summer 2012 Playlist:

(these songs are in no particular order)

1. Rainbow by Jessie J
2. Black Magic by The Magic Wands

  • I downloaded this song when it was the Single of the Week on iTunes and fell in love with it, then later heard it on an episode of Gossip Girl. Now when I hear it I always picture Bart Bass... :P
3. Honestly by Hot Chelle Rae
4. Dreamer by Elizaveta
5. Someone Else by The Working Title
6. Radio by Hot Chelle Rae

10. You by The Pretty Reckless
11. Is Your Love Big Enough? by Lianne La Havas
12. Echos by One Direction (US)

  • This song is by the US band One Direction. They might not be as popular as the UK One Direction, but this song is really beautiful and pretty catchy!
13. The Only One by Hot Chelle Rae

  • Yeah. There's a lot of Hot Chelle Rae on this list. I think I ended up adding, like, half their album :)
14. Murderers by John Frusciante
15. Sparks Fly by Taylor Swift
16. One Thing by One Direction (UK)

  • Yup. It's the UK One Direction this time. I couldn't help it. Their songs are catchy!

28. Falling in Love at a Coffee Shop by Landon Pigg
29. Me Gustas Tanto (3BallMTY Remix) by Paulina Rubio

  • This was a freebie on iTunes and it was just so catchy (I like catchy music, if you haven't noticed :) that I had to add it to the list, even though I don't speak a word of Spanish.
30. Loser of the Year by Simple Plan

  • I used to LOVE Simple Plan but hadn't listened to them in a while until I heard this song. Which, incidentally, was written by Claude Kelley, one of my favorite songwriters ever.
31. All I Need by AWOLNATION

  • Discovered this song while watching Common Law on TBS. This band is awesome and you should totally check out the whole album.
32. Fine By Me by Andy Grammer

44. Lights by Ellie Goulding
45. Young Blood by The Naked and Famous

46. What Makes You Beautiful by Boyce Avenue

  •  This cover of What Makes You Beautiful takes a bouncy pop song and makes it just so incredibly beautiful. If you haven't already, be prepared to download, like, every Boyce Avenue cover after listening to this.
47. My Only Swerving by El Ten Eleven
48. Halloween Mask by Electric Owls
49. Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen

  • This song could possibly be overplayed... but it's still fun to sing along to :)

51. Back to Back by The Ready Set
52. Good Time by Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen
53. Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye
54. Alright by Pitbull

  • I have an odd obsession with Pitbull. I'm actually surprised that this is the only Pitbull song on this list.
55. Shock by Ana Tijoux

  • Again, I don't speak Spanish so I have no idea what this chick's talking about, but I love the way it sounds!
56. Downtown Girl by Hot Chelle Rae
57. Let Go by SafetySuit
58. What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction (UK)

  • I like the bouncy poppy version too!
59. I Summon You by Spoon
60. Why Don't You Love Me by Hot Chelle Rae

  • Hot Chelle Rae is one of the only bands that I like their slow songs more than their fast songs.
61. Girls Freak Me Out by The Summer Set
62. Second Chance by Shinedown
63. Emmy Lou by First Aid Kit
64. Walls by Manic Drive
65. Payphone by Maroon 5
66. Say You Like Me by We The Kings
67. Ours by Taylor Swift
68. Take a Walk (The M Machine Remix) by Passion Pit

  • This. Band. If you haven't heard them before listen to their song Moth's Wings. Just wow. Plus it will always, always remind me of Conrad Fisher <3
So that was basically the soundtrack to my summer. Listen to a few songs if you'd like. I tried to find as many songs as possible and made a playlist that you can check out below!

  1. YES YES YES YES TO TAYLOR SWIFT! I mean seriously, she's my IDOL I totally love her and I hope I'm half as talented as her as a singer one day :) Also, I don't buy a lot of songs >.< I don't buy a lot of books either O_O For me I'll buy a song if I REALLY want it or if it's Taylor Swift but usually I won't. I'm so weird like that even though I'd love to have some of my favorite singles on my iPod :P

  2. I love Jesse Jay! She has such a powerhouse voice. My favorite songs of hers are Price Tag and Love. And, omg. One Direction. They're bloody adorable (especially Harry and Zayn. Shh. Don't tell the others. Hehe)! They're songs are catch that I had them on replay for a week! Haha.

Great selection of songs! Never heard most of them, but I'll be sure to check 'em out. I have my own, and I don't know if you've heard of them before: http://rockeemusikreads.blogspot.com/2011/08/featured-artists.html
