Teaser Tuesday (16): The Forsaken

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

This week's teaser comes from The Forsaken by Lisa M. Stasse. I really like this book. It hooks you right from the first page. The only thing I don't like is how it somehow manages to feel rushed and slow at the same time. Don't ask me how that is, I'm not quite sure. It's still really good though. And it is sooo beautiful in person. Seriously. It might be the prettiest book I own.

"I am ten years old.

I have no idea that tonight I will become an orphan." {The Forsaken, page 1}

Goodreads Synopsis of The Forsaken:

A thought-provoking and exciting start to a riveting new dystopian trilogy.

As an obedient orphan of the U.N.A. (the super-country that was once Mexico, the U.S., and Canada), Alenna learned at an early age to blend in and be quiet—having your parents taken by the police will do that to a girl. But Alenna can’t help but stand out when she fails a test that all sixteen-year-olds have to take: The test says she has a high capacity for brutal violence, and so she is sent to The Wheel, an island where all would-be criminals end up.

The life expectancy of prisoners on The Wheel is just two years, but with dirty, violent, and chaotic conditions, the time seems a lot longer as Alenna is forced to deal with civil wars for land ownership and machines that snatch kids out of their makeshift homes. Desperate, she and the other prisoners concoct a potentially fatal plan to flee the island. Survival may seem impossible, but Alenna is determined to achieve it anyway.

    1. I'd say this one is a little more scifi/survival than dystopian only because the main character is sent away from society so quickly. I think the real dystopian elements will probably come later in the book/series.
