Author Interview: C.L. Causer, author of Power Within

Hey guys!

Today we had the pleasure of interviewing C.L. Causer, author of Power Within. Here's a little about Power Within:
Charlotte 'Charlie' Gordon wants nothing more, than to be a normal girl. But having a near death accident as a child, she finds out that she has powers. After accidentally electrocuting her sister and blowing up her mother's kitchen, she suppresses her powers for ten years. Unknowing that there are more people like her out there. A lot more.
That is until a secret group of them try and hunt her down because of her unusual abilities. Forcing her family into hiding, she goes on the run. Having to learn about her powers and her past, she meets many new friends along the way. But you can't run forever. She learns that someone has betrayed her to the very people she is running from. ~ Courtesy of Goodreads

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I'm not very good at talking about myself, so I will just give you some facts! I live halfway up a small mountain just outside the Mountain range Snowdonia in North Wales. Though I went to school and lived the longest periods of my life in England, my home is Wales. I love the sea. One day I wish to take a scuba instructor course in Bali or Thailand. I listen to far to much music. If I ever feel ill or depressed I read Harry Potter. Despite being in my early 20's, they are still my comfort books. Mulan is probably one of my favourite films, after The Goonies, Labyrinth and Hot Fuzz. If I could move anywhere in the world, it would probably be Canada or Alaska. Somewhere where the mountains and the sea co-exsist. And I collect snowglobes...

How did you come up with the idea for Power Within?

Reading the dozens of Marvel Comics out there that I loved reading as a child. Truthfully, I was more into the art than the story lines (but I'm a sucky artist) but the idea gripped me that these people develop powers and they are instantly "Well, now that I'm indestructible I have to save the citizens!" *hands on hips, looking to the skies* And I'm just like, yeah, okay. Because that's the first thing you would think about. Not. With Charlie (the Main Character from Power Within) you see her struggle and her thought process about her new powers. And I would imagine it would be a struggle. Especially if you think you are alone.

In Power Within, Charlie discovers she has a secret power. If you could choose any power to have, which would you choose and why?

How can you ever choose one!! I think it would have to be invisibility. Well that, or teleportation. You can be anywhere in the world in half a second. But then again, Charlie's power is pretty awesome. I'm not going to say what it is though.... you have to find out!

What was the best part of writing Power Within?

The actual writing part. I spent a ridiculous amount of time researching looking at things like the human biology and limitations, the New York/New Hampshire coastline and even the first class cabin of an airplane. It felt great just to sit down, with my book of well researched notes, and to actually begin writing. Once you start, it just pours out of you.

While writing Power Within did you discover any writing tips or techniques that helped you?

What I said about the research was pretty accurate. I research everything because there will always be someone out there who has more knowledge than you on a subject you are writing about. For every book/story you have in the process of writing, give it a notebook (I currently have 13 notebooks) and fill it will notes, research, drawings, even celebrity pictures of who you think your character is going to look like. So when it comes down to beginning the writing, it makes things so much easier.

Thanks so much for talking to us today, Chantelle! Great advice. I'm definitely going to try that notebook thing :)
