As usual, Follow Friday is hosted by the lovely ladies over at Parajunkee's View and Alison Can Read.; TGIF is hosted by Ginger, from GReads!; and (though it's not yet up) Crazy For Books hosts the Book Blogger Hop.
Now, without further ado:
Today’s Question is something new, an activity. We want to see what you look like! Take a pic with you and your current read! Too shy? Boo! Just post a fun pic you want to share.

Gateway Books: Which particular books opened you up to a new genre?
Jesse: The Girl in the Steel Corset by Kady Cross really opened up the world of steampunk to me. I'd seen steampunk before (in movies or what have you) but I'd never read a book about it. Now I'm dying for my next taste of it, so if you know any excellent YA steampunk books let me know!
Kira: As weird as it may be, I can't really pinpoint any specific book that opened me up to a new genre. I've always just sort of read a hodge-podge of different types of book. What I can say, is that while I did read some YA here and there while I was younger, I didn't read nearly as much as I do now. What got me started there, actually, were a few online stories and authors. I'm not talking fan fiction, necessarily. You can find original stories online, too, and yeah, some of the stuff out there is terrible, but if you're willing to sift through the crap, you can find that handful of really talented -- if a bit unrefined, at times -- budding authors out there.
Two of my favorites (I'm not entirely sure if they're still writing online. I've fallen a bit out of touch) go by the usernames The Silent Lullaby, and Ms. Marauder. It was through people like these, not necessarily these two, that I was introduced to the Twilight Saga through their praise of the books (it was all the rage among online writers between 2006-8 -- took me 'til 2008 to actually read it). From there, I've sort of been a bit of a YA addict though, again, it's not the only stuff I read (as evidenced by Jane Austen Made Me Do It in the picture above).
(and last week, too)
* Last week(end) was a crazy-busy (RL wise) week(end) that we devoted to the Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa. Mainly that means we wrote review of (most -- The Iron Knight review should be out this weekend) her books in the series:
- The Iron King review
- The Iron Daughter review
- The Iron Queen reveiew
* This week, things were a bit more back on schedule.
- PiF got a new look! Cast your vote now on which you think is better.
- Our Book Boyfriend for the week was Ash Redfern, from LJ Smith's Night World series
- For those of you that were paying attention to last weeks reviews, we also hosted a giveaway during that time. The prize? 1 Full set of Julie Kagawa's Iron Fey series, including her latest release: The Iron Knight. You can find out who the lucky winner is right here.

It was hard for me too - to pick books that opened me up to a new genre. I ended up doing one for Steampunk - but now that I'm seeing everyone's answers, I keep thinking of more books (and authors) that introduced me to different genres (like Stephen King for creepy books; Nancy Drew for mysteries).
